Safety is the most important issue when leading a trip; safety of the people, their vehicles and property.
You don’t have to know everything about four-wheel driving to run a trip. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and, if necessary, delegate duties.
The speed of the convoy should be restricted to the maximum speed allowed for the slowest vehicle and/or the lowest license held by the drivers, e.g. P plates or L Plates, and obey the relevant State road rules. It is every driver’s responsibility to know the limits in the state they are travelling through.
Ask if all drivers have minimum recovery gear such as snatch straps (rated 3.2 Tonne SWL), bow shackles, shovel and leather gloves.
Other equipment such as tree protectors, winch extension straps, snatch blocks and a winch are necessity if the trip is going to be in difficult terrain. At least one person on the trip should have the necessary knowledge to be able to use this equipment safely.
Remember it is at your discretion who you take on your trip. If you have any concerns regarding the ability of any person on your trip, do not hesitate to contact the Driver Awareness and Environment Officer or the President for advice.
(***NOTE: If any members have 'Pending' beside their name, please contact the Driver Awareness officer or the Vice President to confirm the members 'status' and confirm they have completed Driver Awareness and are able to attend your trip).
If a problem of any kind occurs whilst on a trip that you are concerned about, fill in the incident report attached to the trip sheet.
