Explore Abercrombie
Our Abercrombie River NP trip was an adventure from start to finish!
Lindsay, Colin, Dave, and I met at Maccas Goulburn around 2pm and didn’t arrive at The Glen until about 5pm. Jimmy, Trish, and Jackson followed us in. The Glen campground access is behind a locked gate, and you can only access if you’re a member of the 4wd Association. It has two drop toilets, a nice green flat camp area and some derelict buildings on the hill. Warwick, Shane, Tony, Cherie & Matt, then Bec & Andrew, arrived in dribs and drabs. Matt, however, made quite the entrance — on foot, with wet boots! There was a tree down over the track, and while a bypass was visible in daylight, it wasn’t easy to spot after dark. To reach camp, he had to cross two river crossings on foot! Saturday - After an 8:30am briefing, Lindsay, Jimmy, and Tony cut back the fallen tree and cleared the track so we could head out and the trailers could get out on Sunday. Our first stop was Ledingham Hut, which has now been cordoned off for safety due to its derelict condition. From there, we continued down
Black Hill Fire Trail, catching a couple of brief showers along the way before stopping for morning tea at Licking Hole Hut. We then travelled along Middle Road and Silent Creek Fire Trail, which had been freshly graded since January. The Silent Creek campsite was full, so we continued up Abercrombie Fire Trail to The Sink for lunch — a lovely, green spot with only a few campers around. After lunch, Bec took over as Trip Leader, guiding us back towards camp via a lookout stop for a group photo before returning to The Glen around 3pm. The afternoon was spent relaxing by the river, feet in the cool running water, beers cracked, and plenty of nibbles going around. That night we gathered around a lamp fire (due to a fire ban). After a long day’s drive, most were tucked up in bed before midnight. Sunday - Everyone made their way home at their own pace on morning. It was a fantastic trip — and a special one for me as it was my first time leading! Huge thanks to Colin and Tony for their confidence boost and support throughout the weekend.
Until next time — happy 4WDing!
