Watton Airstrip
New Year’s Eve this year was spent exactly where it should be — bush camped beside a river at Watton Airstrip, surrounded by good people, good dogs and a track that kept things interesting. Our crew rolled in with a solid mix of tents and vans: Bec, Andrew, Natalie, Nicola, Dave and Judy, Karen and Wayne, and Lynne and Rob. Misty, our ever enthusiastic Staffadore, came along with her mate Cosmo, ensuring no stick, splash or snack went uninspected all weekend. Campsites hugged
the riverbank, giving us front-row seats to flowing water, shady trees and the occasional curious horse or alpaca wandering past like they owned the place. The river itself was mostly shallow and gentle —
perfect for a paddle — except for one deeper bend that quickly became the go-to spot for a refreshing swim. Early risers were rewarded with a rare bonus: two platypus cruising the deep water in the quiet morning light. Worth the early alarm. The drive in delivered a bit more spice than expected. The 4WD track had a few moments that made you stop, assess, and choose lines carefully, especially when
towing. But with calm heads and good teamwork, everyone made it in — and out — without drama. Adding to the fun was an unexpected celebrity neighbour camped beside Dave and Judy. Tent, family, camp chairs and all. He’s best known for V8 Supercars, deal-making and sharing a surname with one of us — proof that even the fast-lane types appreciate a proper bush camp. Great people, capable vehicles, happy dogs, a birthday celebration and a top location — Watton Airstrip delivered a New Year’s weekend we’ll be talking about for a long time. Big thanks to Bec and Andrew for organising a cracking few days away!
